Do you agree that there is something so delicious about the turn of one year into the next? I tend to make personal resolutions, but I also set classroom/teaching goals. This year's goal is to share the "daily extraordinaries"--those quiet but momentous instances of learning or emotional growth that I am privileged to observe and often facilitate as a teacher.
The best nuances of teaching are frequently lost in to-do lists, grading, external pressures and obligations but the daily extraordinaries are what I love most about teaching. When my creative writing students plant themselves on the floor and have a heart-to-heart about how they are going to improve their website and balance their jobs and extra-curriculars as a team it's worth sharing. And, when a student in creative writing makes her final project-- a visual memoir, about coping with her little brother's recent cancer diagnosis--it's worth sharing.
Happy New Year!
